Down Comforters for Kids
As the winter months come in, and your little ones snuggle into their favorite blankets, you’ve probably noticed that they need something that washes easily, and keeps them warm. Down comforters for kids are a great way to keep the electric bills down, and many children find that sleeping in a warm bed in a cool room helps their breathing and circulation.
Consider the following factors when you buy a down comforter for your kids:
- What’s your local climate like? Down comforters come in a variety of weights and fill power. (Fill power is a rough approximation of how insulating the comforter is, as a function of how fluffy the down is.) If you live in the tropics, a down comforter probably isn’t needed. If you live in a cold climate with unreliable heating (a wood stove, or oil furnace), a set of kid’s down comforters stored in the children’s closet is a good thing to have.
- What’s the size of your children’s bed? Make sure that any down comforters you buy for kids are sized appropriately.
- Check to see if any of your kids are allergic to down. If this is the case, a children’s down comforter isn’t recommended, save for emergency warmth.
- How washable is it? Washing a down comforter in detergents strips the feathers of their oils, so look for ones that are well sealed. If your children are still at an age where bedwetting is a possibility, it’s probably better to keep them in wool blankets that are more readily washed than a high priced children’s down comforter. (Contrary to myth, most down comforters can be washed safely – but you do want to put them in the dryer very quickly, and throw in a pair of tennis balls to fluff them up while they dry.)
- If you are worried about wash ability, consider a fibre-fill comforter instead of a down one. For very young ones, consider lots of stuffed animals, which they’ll generally take better care of.
A down comforter for kids is a nice way to accentuate a room’s décor, and it’s a good way to keep warm while cutting heating bills in the winter time. Don’t overlook the importance of keeping warm in the winter months.
